From James T. Sears' Rebels, Rubyfruit, and Rhinestones
"Texas was the first Confederate state to assemble local activits and organize statewide reform efforts. Under the leadership of Ken Cyr and his partner, Charles Gillis, and sponsored by the Fort Worth/Dallas Metroplex Gay Council the first statewide gay conference was held on the weeked of 21 June 1974 tith the theme of "Together we Can". Political stalwarts Franklin E. Kameny, Freda Smith and Barbara Gittings stirred the crowd of two hundred with keynote addresses. Outside the Community Services building of St. Stephens Church, police wrote down license plate numbers. Nevertheless, by Sunday, there was a new statewide organization to press for state reform, the Texas Gay Task Force."
